NBA staff members satisfied with congressional staffers Wednesday to discuss the league ´ s relationship with sportsbooks and other matters connected to the betting scandals that caused federal indictments of Miami guard Terry Rozier, Portland coach Chauncey Billups and others last month, 2 people with understanding of the talks said.

The people, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of privacy because details were not immediately exposed publicly, said that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver was not at the meeting, nor were any sitting members of Congress. Among the people described the meeting in Washington as "a fact-finding session."

It's uncertain if the conference will satisfy demands from lawmakers in both the House and Senate for details from Silver about the league's betting policies and, specifically, why Rozier was cleared to play after sportsbooks flagged uncommon betting patterns surrounding his efficiency for a game on March 23, 2023, when he was with the Charlotte Hornets.

Sen. Ted Cruz, the Republican chairman of the Commerce Committee, and Sen. Maria Cantwell, the top Democrat on that panel, have stated with regard to that video game including Rozier that they want information "about how the NBA investigated and dealt with these claims as well as what steps the Association is taking to preserve the general public ´ s trust."

"This Committee needs to understand the specifics of the NBA ´ s examination and why Rozier was cleared to continue playing basketball," Cruz and Cantwell wrote.

Federal authorities say Rozier conspired with partners to assist them win bets based upon his statistical performance because March 2023 game. The charges resemble what former Toronto gamer Jontay Porter dealt with before he was prohibited from the league by Silver in 2024.

A House committee also requested for detail from the NBA on a number of matters, including "spaces, if any, in existing regulations that allow prohibited wagering schemes to take place." Silver has said sometimes he would choose federal regulation on sports betting over the current design that has private states choosing how it must be managed.
